Future Disco Interview with Huxley

Huxley InterviewPhoto by Katie Palmer

We caught up with Huxley ahead of his appearance for us on the Sunset Terrace at Space (on the 23rd of July), to talk about his forthcoming releases, the VIP lifestyle and his favorite sunset tracks for this summer.

Hey Michael, would you care to introduce yourself to our readers…

Hi my name is Michael, also known as huxley. I'm a house dj and producer from the UK. released on labels like 2020vision, Hypercolour, Cecille etc

I heard you got your name after reading Aldous Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’? Is that right?

Yep, that's right. I basically had to get a new artist name at the time me and Tim (ethyl) were sending out demos. It was coincidence that I was reading, brave new world at the time and I decided that I would borrow his last name. It also turned out to be one of my favourite books.

What would you say were the sounds that inspired you to start making music? Is it a world a way from what you’re creating now?

Definitely not. I get inspire by old garage and house, along with some soul. There's a lot of similarities between old house music and new. Even the old, real garage sounds a lot like todays stuff. Saying this though I also get inspired by a lot of modern music outside of dance music as well, such as bonobo, Musiq Soulchild & Raphael Saadeeq.

You seem to be a busy man with many strings to his bow. Obviously you have your own productions and DJ schedule to keep up with but you also run a record label (Saints & Sonnets) and host a Rinse FM show; how do you find the time to fit it all in?

I don't sleep as much as i'd like is the answer! Obviously when you try to do too much, something has to suffer, unfortunately this year has been original music. Saying that though I'm finally back on it more than ever, and feel more refreshed and inspired than when I was in the studio at the end of last year. I think some time off has actually benefitted my output in the long run.

The Saints & Sonnets output has been really amazing so far; we picked up the new Baslow EP last week and have had it on repeat since. What was your inspiration for starting a record label?

Firstly, thanks! glad you're feeling it ! I've been working closely with record labels for a long time, even own a couple before Saints, but I never had complete control on the output and how it was run. Although it's jimmy and I who run the label, we both have to like something before we pick it up. We like to keep the releases quite varied, but with a strong emphasis on quality throughout. It's also turned out to be a great platform to launch new artists, even though we didn't actually start it out for that reason. We're proud to say though that we've had some of the first releases by Detroit Swindle, Jammhot, SecondCity etc. Obviously Detroit Swindle are flying now, but we feel that there's great futures for everyone we've released so far.

How about your own productions; what is the plan in terms of new releases? Do you have any other aliases that we don’t know about?

No aliases yet. I have been toying with the idea, but at the moment I'm so busy with the Huxley stuff that I simply don't have the time. As for releases, well, I've just signed a two track EP I've made with Shenoda to a really good label (that I'm not meant to announce yet). Also there will probably be one more solo ep by me. After that though it's all about the album, which is supposed to be coming early next year.

What are your thoughts about Ibiza and the general vibe? Are you bothered by the 'VIP' trends spreading like wildfire?

I think the whole VIP thing is a bit strange. Why would you pay so much money to get into a club, just to stand in a roped off section and try and look cool, rather than dance. I'm personally not into it. if I go to a club when I'm not working, which these days is rare anyway, I always want to be out on the dancefloor. That's why I'm there, to see the djs play good music. Saying this though, I love Ibiza. There really is no place like it in the world. It's broken me more than a few times, which makes me love it even more.

Are you looking forward to playing the Space Sunset Terrace with us?

Too bloody right! I can't wait. I played space for the first time the other day for welove in the mainroom, but the terrace is the place I've always wanted to play. The DJs in the other room I've heard are alright as well....

It’s been great chatting with you Michael, can you sign us off with your five favourite sunset tracks for this summer?

Good to talk to you too! And see you soon :)
